TOEFL
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is another widely recognized English proficiency test, particularly for academic purposes. It is used by universities, colleges, and institutions in English-speaking countries to assess the language proficiency of non-native English speakers. Here's a detailed overview of the TOEFL:
TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test)
Sections
Reading (60-80 minutes)
Measures the ability to understand and analyze passages from academic texts. Typically includes 3-4 passages with associated questions.
Listening (60-90 minutes)
Assesses the ability to understand spoken English in academic contexts. Involves listening to lectures, discussions, and conversations with associated questions.
Speaking (20 minutes)
Requires test-takers to express their opinions on a variety of topics. Involves four tasks, including reading a passage aloud, summarizing information, expressing an opinion, and responding to a spoken prompt.
Writing (50 minutes)
Assesses the ability to write responses to academic tasks. Includes two tasks: an integrated task that involves reading and listening, and an independent task that requires writing an essay expressing a personal opinion.
Scoring
Each section is scored on a scale of 0 to 30. The total score is the sum of the scores from the four sections, ranging from 0 to 120.
TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test)
The paper-based version is available in locations where the internet-based test is not feasible.
It has three sections: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension.
The total score is on a scale of 310 to 677.
TOEFL Essentials
TOEFL Essentials is a newer test introduced by ETS (Educational Testing Service) with a focus on testing essential academic English skills.
It is shorter in duration and provides instant scores.
The test includes four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
TOEFL Junior
TOEFL Junior is designed for middle school and high school students. It assesses reading and listening comprehension as well as language form and meaning.
Test Format
The TOEFL iBT is administered online and can be taken at authorized testing centers worldwide. The TOEFL PBT is a paper-based test administered in areas where the iBT is not available.
Validity
TOEFL scores are generally valid for two years.
